Hurstone

Large country holiday house in Somerset sleeping 14 guests in 7 bedrooms. Self-contained ensuite annexe for 2 more guests (extra charge), games room with half size snooker table, private hot tub, large grounds and paddock.

Hurstone is a lovely country house in a beautiful setting; with 7 bedrooms sleeping 14 guests, plus a self-contained annexe for 2 (charged), a games room and private hot tub, this is a very special place to stay for dog friendly large group holidays in the West Country.

Back in the day, Hurstone was a farmhouse with parts of it dating back to the 14th century, so as you can imagine, heaps of character and quirky rustic charm. Interiors are very much country house style, blending so well with the things that make life so convenient these days, like a well equipped kitchen, ensuite bathrooms and wifi.

Set off a quiet lane on a hillside, Hurstone is peaceful and seemingly remote, yet it’s only 3 hours or so from London by road or rail. The sleepy village of Waterrow is just a short stroll away and has a very good gastro pub, The Rock Inn. Wiveliscombe is less than a 10 minute drive and is such a friendly little town with a mix of traditional and lifestyle shops as well as several places to eat.

Stride out from the doorstep and wander the footpath and trails through meadows and woodlands; pootle about the winding country lanes to discover villages tucked away in the hillside and river valleys. A stone’s throw away is Hurstone Nature Reserve, rich in flora and fauna, where the huge pillars of the former Devon & Somerset railway stand sentinel in the landscape.

This is where the pace of life slows down, a wonderful retreat where you can escape, relax and unwind any time of year. Each season brings its own qualities, the lushness of springtime, endless summer days of sunshine and candy floss clouds, autumn and winter with invigorating walks ankle deep in fallen leaves; come back and sit by the fire, be together, enjoy the cosiness.

Whether you come for a short break or extended holiday, you’ll find plenty to do if you want to venture out and about. It won’t take you long to get to Exmoor National Park where you can explore the heather clad heaths, the deep river valleys and dramatic clifftops. The beaches of the Somerset coast are only half an hour away; travel there by steam train on the West Somerset Railway, alight at spend Minehead or Blue Anchor for an afternoon on the sands, visit medieval Dunster with its fairytale castle high on the hill. There is so much out there to be discovered and enjoyed.

Whether it’s a get-away-from-it-all-weekend, a family holiday or celebration, a walking break or a reunion with friends, you’ll go home well rested with the happiest of memories. Check availability and book your stay at Hurstone today!
