The Rock Inn, Waterrow

Dating back more than 450 years, The Rock Inn is an award winning gastro pub tucked away in the picturesque village of Waterrow in Somerset; just outside the River Tone babbles along under the bridge and past centuries old cottages set comfortably among the leafy lanes.

Not many places can rightfully claim that essential mix of country pub and high quality restaurant, but The Rock Inn does exactly that, serving the local community and visitors well. There’s a bar and a restaurant where you can dine on pub classics done exceedingly well, or more contemporary dishes, all cooked with flair by accomplished chefs, using ingredients sourced from the nearby fields, woods and waters. Faced with the A La Carte Menu you might choose a starter of Cornish fish soup with crouton, gruyere and aioli or Chicken liver pate with chargrilled granary bread & fig chutney; follow it up with mains of 8oz local farmed fillet steak served with greens, chips and garlic butter, or Medallions of pork tenderloin roasted in honey & grain mustard with summer vegetables & posh cheesy chips. Round it off with Rhubarb crumble with Madagascan vanilla bean ice cream or Sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and clotted cream.

There’s also a children’s menu with sausage & mash, fishfingers & chips and cottage pie, all served with fresh seasonal veg. You don’t need us to tell you how good the Sunday roast is but we will tell you that what’s nice is that the setting is unpretentious and relaxed and has more than its fair share of old pub charm, especially in the bar – thick stone walls, wooden floors, centuries old beams, a wood-burner for the chillier times of year, and daily specials written on a rustic chalk board. The dining room, by comparison is fresh and modern but it still has that laid back ambience. It’s a good place to be, The Rock and when your belly is full and you feel sated all you have to do is wander at your own pace back up the hill to Hurstone.

Dogs are welcome on leads in the dining room, bar and communal areas.

Opening times vary with the seasons so please check the website.
